About Medical Peels

Chemical peels are an important part of skin health. As an effective treatment option for most skin types and concerns, they improve tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles, breakouts and dark spots, but many people are intimidated to go in for their first peel treatment. The fear of leaving with a bright red face that hurts prevent some from experiencing the many benefits of a peel. The post-peel reality is a glowing, healthy complexion.

SkinFit carries nutrient and acid-packed chemical peels to help you address your biggest skin concerns and rejuvenate your look. The most common are glycolic peels, salicylic, lactic and trichloroacetic (TCA). These variants all act as exfoliating agents, ridding your skin of dead cells and debris. At SkinFit, we can determine the best type of peel for you to help you feel beautiful again.

FAQs

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A CHEMICAL PEEL? The skin is cleansed and a prep solution will be applied to remove surface oils and allow the peel to penetrate the skin evenly. Any sensitive areas that cannot be treated will be protected with a thin film of petroleum jelly. One or more chemical mixtures will be applied, such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), salicylic acid, lactic acid, or a combination peel. The peel will be applied in 1–3 layers, depending on the depth of penetration intended. The acids react with the skin to produce a “controlled wound,” allowing fresh skin to regenerate and emerge. A mild tingling or warm sensation is fan is used to help you stay comfortable.

IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME AFTER A CHEMICAL PEEL? After most peels, the skin will be pink to red, and look shiny and tight. It is vital to apply sunscreen of SFP 30 or greater to the skin for the next 48 hours, minimum. You must also stay out of the sun, as your skin will be very sensitive to UV rays and could be damaged by sun exposure. The skin will begin to flake or peel within 2–3 days after the treatment and can last 3-5 days. Sun-damaged areas of your skin will appear darker at first, then will lighten.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT? This really depends on what condition your skin is in prior to the chemical peel and what your individual skin goals are. Generally, once your skin has healed, you can expect to see smoother, brighter, younger, more radiant, even-toned skin. You may begin to see results from light peels immediately post treatment, and the full effects will be visible between 7-10 days. Results from medium and deep peels will develop in 1-2 weeks. For maximum results, a series of peels is usually recommended, and may be necessary for treating challenging issues such as hyperpigmentation.

WHO IS NOT A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A CHEMICAL PEEL? You may NOT be a candidate for a chemical peel if any of the following apply: • Infection or disease, especially if present on the area being treated • Cut or broken skin • Sunburn • Currently have an active Herpes simplex 1 sore (cold sore) • If you are nursing or pregnant • If you have taken Accutane in last 6 months • If you are unwilling to discontinue use of Retin-A or other prescription topical treatments 5 days prior to your peel, or are unwilling to use sunscreen daily
